CAUTION: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface. |
The system board's BIOS chip contains the Service Tag, which is also visible on a barcode label on the bottom of the computer. The replacement kit for the system board includes a CD that provides a utility for transferring the Service Tag to the replacement system board.
- Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
- Remove the hard drive. See Removing the Hard Drive.
- Remove the optical drive. See Removing the Optical Drive.
- Remove the memory module. See Removing the Memory Module.
- Remove the Mini PCI card. See Removing the Mini PCI Card.
- Remove the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. See Removing the Microprocessor
Thermal-Cooling Assembly.
- Remove the microprocessor. See Removing the Microprocessor Module.
- Remove the hinge cover. See Removing the Hinge Cover.
- Remove the keyboard. See Removing the Keyboard.
- Remove the display assembly. See Removing the Display Assembly.
- Remove the palm rest. See Removing the Palm Rest.
- Remove the modem. See Removing the Modem.
- Remove the speakers connector. See Removing the Speakers.
- Remove the five M2.5 x 5-mm system board screws and lift the system board out and away from
the base plastics.
Installing the System Board
- Insert the video connector on the replacement system board through the side of the base plastics.
- Replace the five M2.5 x 5-mm screws that secure the system board to the base plastics.
- Reconnect the speakers. See Installing the Speakers.
- Replace the modem removed from the system board. See Replacing the Modem.
- Replace the palm rest. See Removing the Palm Rest and follow the procedure in reverse order.
- Replace the display assembly. See Removing the Display Assembly and follow the procedure in reverse
order.
- Replace the keyboard. See Replacing the Keyboard.
- Replace the microprocessor. See Installing the Microprocessor Module.

NOTICE: Before you replace the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly, wipe the thermal grease off of the assembly with a clean paper towel. Squeeze the contents of the thermal grease packet (provided with the kit) onto the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. |
- Replace the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. See Installing the Microprocessor Thermal-
Cooling Assembly.
- Replace the Mini PCI card that you removed from the old system board. See Installing the Mini PCI
Card.
- Replace the memory module that you removed from the old system board. See Replacing the Memory
Module.
- Replace the optical drive. See Installing the Optical Drive.
- Replace the hard drive. See Installing the Hard Drive.
- Insert the battery into the battery bay. See Replacing the Battery.
- Connect the AC adapter to the computer and to an electrical outlet.

NOTICE: Before turning on the computer, replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside the computer. Failure to do so may result in damage to the computer. |

NOTE: After replacing the system board, enter the computer Service Tag into the BIOS of the replacement system board. |
- Turn on the computer.
- Insert the CD that accompanied the replacement system board into the appropriate drive. Follow the
instructions on the screen.
