A few months ago I was purchased a 16gig SanDisk scuzer micro usb drive. It isn't as small as some of the usb drives on the market but on the whole an average size. It was the slide in usb connector so there is no way you can loose the end cap but dirt can get into the contacts as they are never covered. The device was installed with U3 software which I didn't get on with and managed to find an uninstall tool on the SanDisk website that removes all trace of the software from the drive and making it a standard usb drive. Up to now I have had no problems with the device and am very happy with its size, speed and reliability.
